Dimitry Koldun is this years representative for Belarus at the Eurovision Song Contest in Helsinki in May. His name, Koldun means Sorcerer in Russian. Koldun indeed know his spells and potions. His eyes and handsome look has often been compared to British princess Diana. With a special written entry with the suitable title Work Your Magic he is indeed destined to make a huge success amongst girls (and boys) around the whole of Europe. Of course we are all very curious to learn more about this mysterious boy from Minsk. Since his victory in the final in Belarus he has been busy on his promotour and with the preparations for the Eurovision, but he offered a moment to answer the Swedish Eurovision site Gylleneskor.se’s curious questions. Meet Koldun – the magician from Minsk!

Alexander: Hello, Dimitry! Nice to speak with you. How are you? What have you been doing today?

Koldun: Hello! I’m fine. Today I had several performances in Minsk. I’m a litte bit tired beacuse of that.

Alexander: Koldun means sorcerer – I guess that is kind of magic! Do you get many complements for your name?

Koldun: Koldun is my original name, I’ve got it from my grandfather, he is from Ukraine.. I’m a very young magician, I’m only 21, that’s why I need to increase my practice in spells and potions. And Eurovision will help me I hope.

Alexander: So, I know that you were supposed to become a scientist in Chemistry and you even entered the State University in Belarus, but then what happened?

Koldun: Then I understood, that I want to be famous and popular. I have good results in learning chemistry, but I knew, that I never could get any success in this area. Music is more than my hobby, and if I have a chance to sing from radio and TV, from the stages I think I have to use it.

Alexander: Do you still have any special knowledge and skills in the subject of Chemistry, we should be aware of!?

Koldun: I know how to prepare TNT at home, but it’s getting very long time. But don’t worry, I won’t take it to Helsinki.

Alexander: When did your interest in music start?

Koldun: It was several years ago when I was a pupil in school. I performed myself with guitar, took part in different school parties, song competitions, but I never thought it will be my job in future.

Alexander: So then your musical career started and you entered the «Victor Drobysh Star Factory» show – can you tell us about your experiences in that show and what it as all about? – I guess the show is huge in Belarus and in Russia as well?

Koldun: It was a Russian TV project. During four months every week we had a night show, where we had to sing with popular Russian singers. But I had a great honor to made a duet with rock-legends Scorpions. It was amazing for 20-years old boy. It is really big experience for me to be under cameras 24 hours, but it’s great school before ESC!

Alexander: And then you won – and become a big star in Belarus, I guess!?

Koldun: Not only in Belarus, but in Russia too (in general Star factory is very popular all over CIS). Then we had a concert tour after Star Factory all over Russia, Ukraine. Kazakhstan and Belarus of course.

Alexander: Dima, are you also number one amongst girls in Belarus now?

Koldun: Maybe! I hope after Eurovision I could say: exactly!

Alexander: But once you were unhappy in love, I read that at your homepage – You wrote the song «Polkan the dog – Peters Friend» as a result of that, Was it because of that unhappy love that made you start your career in music?

Koldun: Oh no! It’s not a song, it’s the story about Dog and Boy. In Russian in this story every word begins with letter P. That’s the reason why it is interesting. I wrote music before my first unhappy love, but it left some trace in my mind and my music.

Alexander: And who is Peter? And who is Polka? And what about the dog? I’m very curious. ..

Koldun: ;)

Alexander: It seems to me when looking at your previous songs that you are a rock guy!? What kind of music and artists do you like yourself?

Koldun: I like rock or pop-rock style in music. I learned to sing from tape records of my father. He was a great lover of classic hard-rock.. Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple. But I prefer now Bon Jovi, Creed, Rasmus, Aerosmith.

Alexander: Besides music what else interests do you have?

Koldun: In future I want to become a TV producer, or even to organize my own television. This is my dream.

Alexander: If someone visits Minsk – where is it most likely to meet you? Let me guess; perhaps at a library reading Chemistry or Harry Potter books!?

Koldun: Yes! I like to walk around in Minsk parks and avenues, but now I have really no time for it. Maybe you can see me in the car, driving to the studio or rehearsal.

Alexander: How was your experience singing and touring with Scorpions – what kind of relationship do you have to that group?

Koldun: They are very simple and nice people and professional musicians, of course. It was easy to make a contact with them.

Alexander: I guess Scorpions and many others simply has fallen in love with your great voice! Where have you trained that?

Koldun: Listening to my tape recorder. Also I’ve got lots of great advices from my elder brother.

Alexander: And also, you speak and sing English very well it seems! I guess you like languages, you also still write songs and lyrics don’t you?

Koldun: Yes. I think, that English is very melodic language.

Alexander: Your feelings when you won the Eurofest in Belarus?

Koldun: Great!!!!

Alexander: And then of course you must tell us about how it was meeting our beloved Carola? It seems that you got along very well with her, I saw some pictures and she even invited you to Sweden, do you still have contact with her? I guess you know how big she is in Sweden and in the history of Eurovision?

Koldun: Carola had great performance in Minsk and it was very pleasant to meet her and to have conversation. Me and everybody from EuroFest who invited Carola to Belarus were so impressed by her professionalism! She is a great singer and very beautiful woman, but in the same time she is opened to everyone. Belarussian people like Carola very much!

Alexander: So at last – I wanted to ask you even more questions but we will do that another time – What are your greatest wish right now? Please tell us and I*ll see if I can help you fulfil your dreams! (I’ll try with some magic).

Koldun: I wish love to all of you. Be in love and…Work Your Magic!
